Seawheeze Half Marathon

When I was training for my first half marathon, my friend from the first day of kindergarten… Jody and I chatted about doing a race together some time.  We always love spending time together and the fact that we live in different provinces makes that a bit tough to work out on a regular basis.

January came along, and Jody and I chatted about training for an event we could do together.  We had travelled to New York together and often talked of travelling to a race or something.  A kind of a ‘fit-cation’.  Run, shop, eat, laugh, and make memories.

Well, I had just read about the Seawheeze and mentioned it when we were chatting.  Before you knew it, we were signing up and super excited to start our training.

Race weekend arrived before we knew it.  Jody flew into the valley and stayed here with Andy, the boys and I that night and first thing in the morning, we were off.  It was one of those trips where everything goes your way… we drove up to, and directly on the ferry… that never happens!  We got upgraded to an excecutive suite at the hotel, and were hand delivered a beautiful ‘on the house’ dessert by the chef.  We shared a bacon-maple apple fritter… had the yummiest fries ever!  And we laughed.  A lot!

Race morning… up at 4:50am.  After a difficult-to-fall-asleep-then-startled-awake-by-an-alarm-TWICE- night.  Off to the skytrain and downtown to the race.  I was excited.  The atmosphere felt fun.  I knew it would be.  We lined up and as we waited, we met Doctor Dribble.  What an inspiring individual.  He dribbles 2 basketballs while running marathons and half marathons, and raises money for charity.  And, when I wrote this… held the world record for the fastest marathon while dribbling.  I could not even imagine!  I can barely put one foot in front of another when I am running.

We ran.  And took pictures.  And finished the race.  Then had brunch.  A little stretch, and ride back to our hotel.  After dinner and fries (again… they were that good!), we headed in for the concert.  The whole weekend was amazing.  We spent our Sunday morning sitting in our jammies, drinking tea, and visiting in the hotel room, then shopping in some cute little shops and having lunch in an adorable little cafe.

Truly was one of the best weekends.  Ever.  And I can not WAIT to do it again!

You see… we registered for the Seawheeze in January.  And this year, registration for the next one in 2015 was only 2 weeks after the race.  Two weeks to wait and hope that we got in within the -20 minutes and it sold out- window.  We did!  And, Jody’s sister Vicki (who has always felt like a sister to me too) is coming to do it with us!  It is going to be amazing.  A weekend filled with running, belly laughs, yummy fries, shopping, bacon apple fritters, and fun with friends.  That I have known my whole life.

I can’t wait!!

xo N

And…. this is all happening today!  Although I have spent most of this year with an injury, I can not wait to spend the weekend with these lovelies, and walk myself across that finish line.  I’m all about the fun.  And the donuts!  ;)

Mikhal ~ Graduation

Now, I love this family.  Like, LOVE them!  Annmarie and I have been friends for years and when we get together, memories are made and tummies hurt from laughing.

I have wanted to get them in front of my camera forever, and this day was the perfect opportunity.  Mikhal’s graduation was a celebration!  A celebration with family, and friends and all of the people that love him and his family as much as I do.  It was a very special day topped off with a wonderful dinner, and cake back at Mikhal’s place.  I am so incredibly thankful to have been a part of such a wondeful day where you could feel the love in the room.

Congratulations Mikhal, and your family and friends on your graduation.   You are an incredible young man.  We are all blessed to know you!

Andréa ~ Graduation

I’ve know this sweet little girlie since she was 13 when I photographed her for the first time.  Now, this is the fourth time she’s been in front of my camera, and over the past 5 years, she has grown into a beautiful young woman.  Since the first time I met her, I have said what a nice girl she is.  And now, she’s just the sweetest, kindest young lady.  I am proud to know her.

Andréa, I had so much fun with you and you were up for anything!  Thanks for venturing off with me to find ‘the best spot ever’ and having so much fun while we were there.  Congratulations on your graduation!  You will do great things, my friend.

xo Niki

These three are about as fun as they come.

I hope you have this much fun every single day of your life!!  :)

Love to you!!

Teryn ~ Graduation

The moment I met Teryn and her family, I felt like I had known them for a long time.  That’s what happens when you are lucky enough to work with friends of past clients.  I have photographed the Bohn family on three different occasions, and it is the greatest compliment ever when a client tells their friends about you.  Thank you so much!

We started Teryn’s session with her family in their beautiful back yard.  I had driven by their house a couple of days prior and found a couple of great places within a minute walk from the house.  That was the best.  Locations that are unexpected, but offer something so beautiful that helps to create magical portraits.  The girls were up for anything!

Thank you Teryn, Olivia, Marla and Bob for a wonderful session.  You were wonderful to work with.  Congratulations to you Teryn on your graduation and I wish you all the best in the future!

Tim ~ Graduation

I have known this young man since he was itty bitty.  I think he was maybe 5.  And over the past 12 years, I have watched him grow into a fine young man.  Tim is younger brother of Kyle, who graduated a couple of years ago and my boys admire them equally.  All three of the little Flynnies look up to Tim and always ask if he’s coming to visit when his Mom does.  It’s wonderful for me as a Mom, to have someone that I look up to and admire, like Carrie, and for my boys to admire and look up to like Tim and Kyle.

When we were planning this session, I asked Tim where he would like to go, and we both decided that then gym was the perfect place!  Tim spends a lot of time there and it only felt natural to do his causal photos there.  It is a teeny tiny space that is was as hot as a sauna the day we were there… or maybe it was just all the running around the equipment and weights I was lifting… it was like a real workout for the photographer!  ;)

We admire you Tim and the young man you have grown into.  My boys have such a great role model in you, and for that I am thankful.  All the best to you!  Congratulations!

xo Niki

Shooting in a teeny-tiny, (did I mention sauna-like) room filled with mirrors can be tricky.  So, I took advantage and got a couple of behind the scenes shots. :) Thanks Tim!!

Seriously so much fun!  Then Tim got ready for grad… and I refueled with M&M’s.  ;) Cause I had just worked out… right?

Did I mention how much I love this family?

Cutest parents and grandparents around!

That’s a good looking crew!

 Congratulations Tim!

Becky & Harris ~ Maternity

You know I believe everything happens for a reason.  Well, when we were building our new house 4 years ago, another new house was being built across the street.  And, well, we live in the middle of nowhere, so that’s kinda a big deal.  Our new neighbours moved in around the same time as we did and forever, I had been meaning to pop by with some cookies and introduce ourselves.  Well, Mr. Archie did that for us, one evening when he popped over without his family and we went over to pick him up.  Becky and Harris are like Archie’s second family and he loves them like crazy!  How could you not? We do too!

Our family is super excited to meet this little baby.  I simply adore Becky and Harris and can not wait to meet their little baby and get some sweet snuggles.  We spent a lovely evening together on the beach and captured the beauty and grace of Becky… honestly she makes pregnancy look like a breeze!

Here’s some of my favourites from our evening together.  Can’t wait till the next photos I get to share of them include another sweet family member!  Little bambino is due ANY day!!  I can’t wait!  xo

Much love to you both!  Thank you for asking me to photograph you during this special time… it means the world to me!

xo Niki

Shaylene ~ Graduation

Shaylene is a beautiful girl with an amazing smile.  When I lived in Gold River, I used to see her walk by the house all of the time as we were neighbours.  I’ve watched her grow up from a sweet little girl into a beautiful young lady. Believe it on not… this beautiful girl, who could very easily be a supermodel… is one of the toughest you will ever meet on the ice… she’s an amazing goalie!

Although my time with her was short… I loved every single picture I took of her, and I could have photographed her for hours! Shaylene, you are incredibly photogenic and I can not wait to photograph you again!  Loved my time with you and your sweet family!

All the best to you sweet girl!  Congratulations on your graduation!

Healthy Family

Oh hi, friends!  It’s been a long time…. I’ve missed you!!  xox

So, I have many friends who have been talking about essential oils a lot for the past year or so.  And, I have been listening.  I have always been interested, but didn’t know where to start.

I have always wanted to make our family as healthy as possible (what parent doesn’t?) by feeding my crew lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and meat that has grown up on a farm and been fed by our friends.  (For real!)  So when my friends started talking about all of the ways that they were helping their families using essential oils, of course I was intrigued.

Super interested to find out how I could do the same things for my family.  Andy’s allergies make him crazy!  And once he starts sneezing, there’s no stopping him… like, until the next day!  When it starts all over again. It’s awful. I feel for him. Friends shared stories how essential oils helped with seasonal discomforts…  They talked about helping children fall asleep, tummy issues, skin issues, and cleaning their homes, all using essential oils.  I was intrigued.

So, I went ahead and purchased the Premium Starter kit from Young Living.  It came with 11 oils, a lovely diffuser, and samples of some of their other wonderful products.  The first day I diffused an oil, the next day too.  Then I used oils on my skin. I’ve put oils on Archie to help him stop itching, and have seen great results in so many areas.  Send me a message if you are wondering about a specific issue, and I am happy to tell you what is working for us… there’s far too many great results we’ve seen to list here.  :)  I’ve made spray to help me enjoy the outdoors in the evenings ;), used oils to support my kiddo’s immune systems, and daily, I enjoy my diffuser.  I diffuse oils in the morning to start my day on an energized note, and at the end of the day, diffuse oils that make us all sleepy.  There is so many wonderful things that I have already seen these oils do and I have only had my kit for a little over a month!!!  Can you believe it?  The Premium Starter kit is an amazing value.  It’s only $173 (and it’s retail value is twice that!), and in addition to all of the wonderful oils and goodies, you also get all the ability to get the oils forever more at 24% off.

I am excited to use something on my family that is from the earth.  So excited.  I have got a group of fabulous girlfriends who also use these oils and have had all kinds of success from them too. And I’ve got an incredible online resource available to me that is quite simply, amazing.  It’s like google for essential oils!  ;)  I am excited to make face washes, sleepy creams, bath salts, body butters and ‘make me feel better’ teas.  I will share recipes here for all of them.  If you think that you’d like to try them out too, just let me know.  I am excited to learn and share all that I know about them as well as my other ‘oily’ friends!

Here’s some of the things we’ve seen success with so far…

I’ve used Lavender, Lemon and Peppermint on Owen & Andy for seasonal discomforts.

Peppermint helps to relieve tension

Lavender makes this night owl super sleepy, and the kiddos too.  It can be used for so many things that I can’t wait to try!

Purification is one of my favourites… I use it on my face, on my wool dryer balls in place of fabric softener, I diffuse it often with lemon and it smells so fresh and lovely, and it obliterates stinky house odors… like when you burn cheese off a pizza in the oven.  ;)

Panaway is wonderful for sore muscles, and used it on Owen’s jaw after he got his braces.

Lemon is the freshest, most lovely smell ever!  I put a drop in my water, use it to remove sticky goo off of things and it can be used to flavour food.    Lemon has so many jobs it’s great at!

Thieves.  Oh Thieves.  I think you are my bestie!  A drop of thieves and lemon with honey in a cup of hot water is both yummy, and helps to ease scratchy throats and thieves on the feet supports our immune systems. It kinda makes me feel like a superhero, cause it’s just so great. ;)  You can use it for cleaning.  It smells like Christmas, and oh how I love it so!!

These oils plus a handful more, the diffuser, samples and literature all come in the Premium Starter Kit.  As I mentioned, that is how I got started, and it’s how I recommend all newcomers to the world of essential oils get started.  That way, you get to try out a whole bunch of oils and see for yourself just how wonderful they are and how much they are helping YOUR family!

There are many different essential oil companies out there, but for my family, Young Living is the only one I trust wholeheartedly. Young Living has a seed to seal promise, which means that they plant their own seeds in their own crops, harvest, distill and bottle the oils, all in their own factories!  It’s pretty amazing!

I am super duper excited about these oils and all that they are doing for my family, and all that I have seen them do for my friends as well.  Comment below if you want to know more information or go ahead and continue reading about how to get started with me.  Let’s take care of our families with the goodness of Mother Nature and the Earth.

How to get your hands on the Premium Starter kit.  Click here =>

1. Select ‘Sign up as a Wholesale Member” which also gives you 24% off all of your oils forever more!

2. The Enroller ID and Sponsor ID boxes should already be filled in for you.  If they are not, fill in 2739787 in both spots.

3.  Fill in all your personal information.  The reason you are asked for your SIN# is in case you make over $600 per year selling Young Living. That being said, you are not obligated to sell anything if you do not want to. Ever.  I simply use my oils for myself and my family.  :)

4.  Create your password and pin then select your kit.  I recommend the Premium, because you get all the oils and the diffuser and it has the best value!

5.  It will ask you if you want to sign up for Essential Rewards.  I recommend saying no to this for now.

6. Agree to the terms and conditions and then don’t forget to CONFIRM YOUR ORDER.  Some people miss this step.

7. Wait for the mailman to arrive!  It will feel like forever, but will actually only be about a week.  It’s kinda how a treadmill minute is WAY longer than a real minute!  haha!

And, if we’re not already friends on Facebook, send me a friend request and I can add you to all of the fun oily Facebook groups and discussion groups. AND to send you our 80+ page handbook, that is full of information about oils, real life stories, and oodles of oily recipes!

I can not wait to share the oily goodness with you!  If it is this great so far, I can not wait to see all that it can do!

Much love to you! Please let me know if you have ANY questions at all!

Lapointe Family

I love this family… for so many reasons.  I love how their love simply shines through each and every one of them.

Danielle and I have been friends for years.  We met at toddler swimming lessons when Sabine and Sean were babies, and Sophie, Tessa and Thomas were in our tummies… almost 10 years ago!  Danielle and I and have spent many, many ‘girls nights‘ together.  So many fun memories and so many more to make, but since moving from Gold River, I have not seen the girls as much as I’d like to.  So, we planned a girls night for a Thursday evening, and a photo session for the morning after. When we woke up and looked outside… I was a bit worried.  The sky was grey and there definitely was a storm looming. We arrived at our location, a few raindrops fell, I captured the love that this family shares so easily, and it started to pour down rain immediately as we finished.  Perfection!  Couldn’t have asked for it to work out better.  Our session was super fun and easy peasy, and when you love each other as much as these 5 obviously do, it’s hard not to take a great photo of them.  Thanks to you all.  You’re awesome, and girlies… you are obviously professional supermodels!  ;)

Love you!!

Sarah & Adam ~ Wedding

Sarah holds a special place in my heart.

Sarah & Adam met at UVIC one evening.  Ironically, I met Sarah because I went to UVIC.  You see, when I was completing my teaching degree, I was placed in Sarah’s classroom as her new student teacher.  We would sit together in the staff room, two twenty something year olds, and chat and giggle.  Quite honestly, it was one of my very favourite parts of all of my years in university.  A great mentor who became a great friend, I was absolutely honoured when Sarah asked me to photograph her wedding.

An intimate event on a Thursday afternoon, with only immediate family, and one student teacher-turned photographer. What an honour to be a part of such a special day.  Thank you Sarah and Adam for asking me to be a part of your wedding.  It was a perfect day, with lovely people, gorgeous weather, beautifully thought out details, and yummy cake.

I wish you both a life filled with love and laughter.

xoxo Niki

Sarah and Adam travelled by boat to the ceremony site.
